Save it, Don't Waste it.

This is my lovely poster for our third project. I chose to do this topic, of the conservation of water, because recently in my Intercultural communications class we were told do write a paper on a news article that affects many people around the world. I chose to write mine on the Water Crisis, focusing on The Wine to Water campaign. This campaign is about many different Bartenders in the world who give up their tips for one week to donate it wine to water who provides clean water, and water wells, to nine different countries who lack access to clean water. After writing my paper I realized that most of the time I'm wasting gallons and gallons of water a day, and that I want to try to conserve it as much as possible because we don't know if one day we will run out of it. So my message was to get people to try and save water, by pointing out that it is essential to life, because it is something every life on this earth needs, and pointing out how fortunate we are, that they are people in different countries who don't even have access to water like we do. There are many different countries in Africa where people walk over 10 miles, taking up most of their day in the heat, trying to access water. When they do get access to the water, the water they do get isn't purified, and gets their families sick and the sickness sometimes leads to death. So my main point was to not take advantage of water, and to save it and not waste it. I have already started my own way of conserving water, but not letting it run while I brush my teeth, and telling people not to let it run at work. Little things. I don't think its much of a challenge to conserve it, and I do think it will help.

Cool Inspirational Posters

So I decided to look up some inspirational posters since our new project is to make a poster with a meaningful quote, created by us. I chose to share this first poster, I find it to be cute. It says "There's you," which is the red car, "and then there's everybody else" and everybody else is fruits, cakes, forks, and spoons. What I like about this poster is the way everything was spaced out. The creator decided not to make the grass just a flat surface, but yet a hill. At the top point of that hill is the red car which is "you." I also think that the word "you" being in a different font also help differentiate, "you" and "everybody else." It also kind of looks like there is a face in the O of the word "you."What I think the posters message is besides the obvious, is to just be yourself and not be like everyone else. Although there is fruits, and utensils, and cakes which each fit into the same family, each thing besides the car is still different from the other, nothing in this picture is the same. I also like the background color, although it kind of looks like a shade of a light green/ yellow, which is kind of similar to the grass, it works, and I think it works because of the space the red car takes up.
The next poster, I liked as soon as I seen it. The designer set it up as a poster that you see when you visit the eye doctor, and they cover your left or right eye to test your eyesight. The typeface looks exactly like the one they use at the eye doctors office, and the size decreases from large to small. It says "See the beauty that is all around you." I think this quote is a nice quote because not a lot of people realize the beauty that is all around them. I also like how the background color is like a sandpaper color with white that makes it look as if its an old paper. I also like how the designer incorporated the eye at the end, because you see with you eyes, so I think the eye was a good last touch to the poster.

In this poster I have no idea who, this guy is, but what I like about it is his face, if he was talking he looks as if he was to strongly feel the way he does about whatever he maybe saying. As it says in the picture, "If you're going through hell, keep going." I found this quote to be inspirational, because it made me think, you know hes right. If your already going through what you feel like is hell, why stop and not try to push on. Keep going. What really made this poster, was that the photo is tinted in red. Red reminds me of hell in this photo, and I think that was the point. The designer did a really good job, and I think what tops it off is the white typography. Because White is a color that symbols purity, and goodness, and the words inspire you to continue.

Stunning Dance Posters.

One thing that my friends know about me is that I really love to dance. So while online, I stumbled accross a couple of dance posters that I loved and thought I should share.

The first poster, says to dance as if no one is watching. What I love about this poster, is how well the tone of the colors pink and brown go together. I like the way the designer intertertwined the colors as well, by having one backgroud pink with brown letters, and the opposite on the bottom. The background also looks like the typeface was written on some type of wood, and although the typefaces are two different ones they complement each other. This poster is something I would definitly put on my wall.

The next poster to the left is of a dancer, who is doing ballet, inside of a dancing studio. What I love about this picture is the symmetry that it has. the dancer is on one corner, while the quote is in the opposite one. Also the quote eleminates the big white space that would have been left in the picture. Although there is still a significantly big amount of space towards the bottom right corner, looking at this poster I feel like it doesnt really need to be filled because the floor is so shiny, it reflects the window which is kind of like adding another object.

This next poster is of two dancers, a man and a woman. What I love about this is that it is simple, with the colors black and white. I love the way it was drawn, it makes it seem like a scriptive kind of drawing. I also like the way the swoop comes from the top left of the page to the bottom right. It makes me feel like there is a sort of movement in the photo, or as is that swoop could the dress of the female dancer. This picture embodies passion, dance, and love all in one. On thing that made this picture even more symmtrecial was the authors scriptive signature at the other corner, opposite of the foot of the woman.

This last poster is a poster that I already have hanging in my room. What I love about it is the simplicity. It is a picture of the dancers feet, and in the corner, It says dance in a large size typeface, with a quote under, in a smaller size typeface. The contrast of the shadows, and the light colors from the floor and the dancer, makes the poster have a type of balance. I think if the quote was placed somewhere else in the photo the poster would look odd and weird. But I love this poster, and it embodies a part of who I am, because sometimes the body says what words cannot.

Magazine Outline Project

This is my Magazine outline project, and on of my favorite pieces of work. Where should I even start? Left to right as we read I guess! With my title, I started off using a different typeface, one that was more on the script side, apple Chauncey to be exact. I was told to change this because "everyone" likes to use that script, and so I found that typeface and feel in love with it. I made the word color, 5 different colors in the rainbow, because I already knew that in the article they were going to talk about many different colors, and I wanted to make sure I incorporated enough of them.
The picture under the title, was actually a last minute touch, and another change that was suggested to by the professor. The original picture that I had being displayed was of a yellow, blue, and orange flower, that had a trail of paint with the same colors, under them. That photo was a bit too big, and to downsize it, would take away the look of the photo.
Although I have my columns 3 a page, I never exactly chose to do it that way, it just came out that way as I continued on with the project. I chose a couple of different colors for the sub-headings. I did this to incorporate more color. The first one is purple because the picture nearby was purple as well and I thought that would be a nice attribute. For the second sub-header called "The mix of colors" I mixed up the colors so that is would match what the current words are saying. For whats your color preference, I chose pink because that is my favorite color. For the sub-header making the right choices, I chose orange because orange was the color that match the last picture that I wanted to add.
As for the other pictures I included in the piece, I chose them with many thoughts. I chose the purple prism because it showed all the colors in the rainbow, and the text also spoke about Sir Isaac Newton who discovered that when white light passes through a prism you see all the colors in the rainbow. As I read on in the text, there was a whole section where they talked about nothing but colors. I wanted to include at least a picture of two of these colors. I chose to go with the twizzler picture for the color red, because the text says red was the most emotionally intense, and I wanted to see if I could make people want one by looking at that picture. I know I sure did. I chose the forest, and waterfall picture for the color green because I love nature, and I consider nature to be a calming atmosphere, and the green in that picture was very calming, as the text says " It is a calm refreshing color." The one thing I really loved about that picture was that even the water reflected the color green, from the reflection of the trees through the forest. The last picture I chose, I chose because I loved the way that at the bottom of the photo is scaled the many different colors inside of the photo. That photo was also in a way very calming, because it was just seaweed washing ashore.
Last but not least, I chose the background color to be that light faint yellowish color because I felt it was a color that was very light on the eyes and that it would display the others colors, just as well as white could.
I absolutely loved doing this project, and I am so proud of how it came out. What do you think?

Dots and Symmetry

This was another exercise given to practice on our symmetry. Although it doesn't look like the biggest challenge, the challenge of doing this was getting the tow boxes that are located at the bottom, to be aligned correctly. As I look at this image now, I notice that the box on the right has the dots more evenly spaced out than the dots on the left. On the left it actually kind of looks like there is some sort of clutter in the top left corner. Or maybe my eyes are just playing tricks on me.
Doing the first square on the top left was easy because all I had to do was make sure it was centered. Doing the square on the top right was a task because although I just copied the size of one circle to make the next, aligning them to be at the same point was away from the corners was kind of annoying. But looking at it now I see there is an even spacing going diagonally through the middle. The next square with the big and little circle was annoying as well because one circle was huge compared to the other. I was a bit confused on how to make them look like they fit in the exactly same spot just in different corners. The next square was easy, or at least I assumed it to be, because now as I look at it, it looks a tad bit off, but I cant tell whats throwing it off.
Overall I think this exercise was suppose to help us grasp the idea that symmetry in design is very important, and can hinder the eyes if something is asymmetrical. I learned that I really need to pay attention to small details, like spacing, and that this will help better me as a designer.
Do you guys see what I see ?

Exercise Numero Three: Eye Games.

This is my exercise number three that I did in class today. I had a couple of difficulties with doing this exercise, that were minor, but still played a big part.
In the first part of this exercise, the one in the top right corner, we had to make five boxes, pick our own colors, duplicate them, gray scale them and put both the original colors and gray scale colors in order. I think doing this was so cool, because I would of assumed that the colors belonged in a different order, than what the gray scale did. But after putting them in order I realized that although that orange is a brighter color than the blue, its still darker in hue, which is why the gray scale came out darker.
In the second part of this exercise, which is at the top right corner, I loved how the blue and the yellow and the lighting green squares looked. My problem with this one was separating them. Although I went to window pathfinder and divide, I also had to do command shift g, which would ungroup the shapes. I was stuck for a while like why isn't this separating the middle box??!! Well if anybody reading wants to know that answer just remember command shift g to ungroup after dividing.
Now in the third part of this exercise, I found this one relatively easier, but tricky on the eye. We had to make 3 inch squares, with another square in the center that was .75 inch squares. One box is black while the other was white, and in the center maintained the grey background. So it kind of looked like as if a square hole was inside of the white and black box. Now although the bigger boxes are equal in size, and the smaller boxes are equal in size as well,  the trick being played on the eye is that the grey box in the black box, looks bigger compared to the grey box in the white box.
In the fourth part of this exercise we had to do the same thing that we did in the third part, but for one box we had to make the colors  be complementary, and the other box to be analogous. The complementary color emphasizes the perception of the hues, while the analogous color subtracts from the perception of the hues. Looking at the green inside of the purple and the blue, the green in the purple seems darker than the green in the blue. But they are indeed the same size. How cool.

My Initial Design

This is my initial design. For this design we had to include our initials, a couple a words that we felt decribed us, and design it our own way. I love this design because it is so me. I made it to look like a portrait of nature, [something I would have hanging in my house] but I made it in a way that wasnt so obvious. I purposely made it blocky, so that it would look like more of a design. The tree trunk is blocky, as well as the leaves, that lead into this pink background which reminds me of the sky when the sun is going down, and the blue rectangle is meant to be a river. I placed the quote in the river because the first word was cry, and tears are a form of water, and later in the quote it say to let these tears water the seeds of your future happiness. So I felt like since there was so much "water" in the quote that placing it there was a good idea. My favorite color sceme in the design was the darkish red on top of the brown. I feel like the two blended well. I also like the pink heart in the tree, and chose to do this because I felt it would make the tree pop more rather than having it black like normally. Another thing I did with the pink was have it be the stroke of the black "tape" holding up the design.
In my original design before this final one, instead of having the pink, I actually had that space the color  teal, but it was suggested to be changed to a brighter color by our lovely professor. Although I didnt understand at the moment why she thought a bright color would be better, after changed the teal to pink, I feel like my design just came alive. So I like the change :]

Creative Album Covers.

So after looking through the favorite album covers of the half past century, I decided that I wanted to share some of my favorite album covers as well.
This first Album cover is Carlos Santana's debut album from 1969, Santana. In the cover, the first thing that catches the eye is the lion and the name of the album, Santana. I love the way that the name of the album is linked to the picture, and as mysterious as the photo is, the typeface is just as mysterious. When I first seen this album cover, my mother was playing the album, and me being curious wanted to know who made this good music. When I picked up the album, I was frightened, because the eyes of the lion scared me. Now that I'm older, I think this album cover is cool, because its not only a lion, but there is a person and many faces. At the top, there's one face, with two faces underneath right on top of the eye area. There are also two other faces, where the whiskers are coming out of.  And underneath the chin of the lion face, there is legs. Although I read online that the legs are there because its suppose to be a native person with a skirt, my eyes have failed to see it. Do you see it?

What I love about this album cover, is A LOT. It has the old school 50's type of feel to it, and the type face outer lining matches the border with the gold, as well as the silver filling in the words "NO DOUBT" kind of matches the inside of the picture where the moon is shining. I also think that the mini pictures, like the coconuts at the bottom, and the flies and Gwen, and the guys along with the tree and the "Tragic Kingdom" was all placed where they were very well. I also think the the dry grass and the dead tree reminds me of Africa, where there are alot of Kingdoms, but the fact that its all seems dead reminds me of a tragic Kingdom. Overall I think this album cover was designed very well.

This album cover, is by Pink Floyd and the name of the album is called The Tree of Life. What I love about this is, it matches the album name because its a tree. But not only is it a tree, its a tree that was shaped to make it look like the side of a face. I think its so cool how they did this,  I can tell it was photo shopped, but whoever did that, did a good job, because the face itself just reminds me of life.

This is Keri Hilsons album, No Boys Allowed. What I love about this album is that, her name was written in the pink "lipstick". The only things that have color is the lipstick in her mouth (which at first I thought was a cigarette), the yellow do not cross tape, that she has labeled as the album name no boys allowed, and her name. I think this worked very well with this photo, and if it was in full color it may have been a little too much. I think with the lipstick in her mouth, that gave her a very sexy look, that would attract boys or men, but the tape over her body in that bright yellow probably made a couple of guys not buy the album. I think its really creative though.

This is another one of the album covers I choice. I actually found this one on the list, and liked it a lot, Its Frank Sinatra's Album, Tone Poems of Color. What I like about is it once again matches the album name, and has many different tones of color, and within the tones on the right hand side are the different color poems, matching the color, inside that color strip.  The only color poem that didn't seem to match was "Brown" which was actually in the red tone. I wonder why.

But these are some of my favorite album covers of all time, that I wanted to share because I think they were very cool, creative, and done with a lot of thought, alignment, and symmetry to them.
